What is it? Why is it important? In order to have a successful classroom, students must feel safe and loved, both by their peers and by the adults around them. A teacher must take time to get to know each student, showing them that they care about and respect them. In turn, students must practice listening to, sharing with, and respecting one another, as well as being respectful to the adults around them. Once this atmosphere is established, learning can take place. It's all about relationships! What are the key elements involved? Teacher interactions with students, including both words and actions: When interacting with students, teachers must let their students know that they are loved, have unique gifts, and are capable of accomplishing their goals. Student interactions with other students, including both words and actions: Through the way that teachers carry themselves, students will see what behavior is expected of them. One of the strongest forces in creating a positive classroom environment is friendship. Because of this, it is important for teachers to encourage their students to get along with one another and to enjoy each other. How will I implement this component into my classroom?
To promote friendships within the classroom, I will have students work together on various assignments in partners or small groups. Occasionally, I will allow them to choose who they would like to work with, but to ensure that no students are being left out, I will select the groups the majority of the time.
To get to know students and show them that they are cared about, I will have them fill out a questionnaire that asks them about their personalities, what they are interested in, extracurricular activities that they are involved in, etc. By doing this, I will be able to form deeper relationships with my students through learning about who they are and attending their events when possible.
