What is it? Why is it important? Excellent teachers are those that put student success above their own. Everything that teachers do should be done with a desire to see students do well and to reach their full potential, not to make themselves look good or to earn a certain reputation. It is not wrong for teachers to want to do well, but this cannot be what drives them. Instead, teachers should have the best interest of all students as the reason behind their actions. In addition, teachers must show professionalism with their colleagues, families, and students, demonstrating to them that they take their work seriously and deeply care about the well being of the individuals in their classroom. At times, teachers must be willing to fight for their students and may likely have to go out of their way to see that the right thing to do is the thing that is done. In all aspects, teachers must carry themselves with humility, determination, passion, and an attitude that is worthy to be respected. What are the key elements involved? Integrity and ethical conduct: In all of their actions and interactions with others, whether other teachers, administrators, students, or families, teachers are honest and show wisdom. Service to students: Teachers must remember that serving is their responsibility. They must willingly put the needs of their students above their own and act in such a way that benefits their students. Advocacy: Teachers must not be afraid to stand up for their students if something does not help to advance their learning, even if their actions may at times be in opposition to traditional systems of teaching. Decision making: Students' needs and interests must always be the number one focus of a teacher. When making decisions in the classroom, teachers must remember to have this kind of mindset. Compliance with school and district regulations: As a professional, teachers must follow school and district policies. This will help them to be viewed as someone who should be respected. How will I implement this component into my classroom?
I will maintain a humble attitude and put the interests of my students above my own
I will fight for my students when necessary
When interacting with others, I will work to listen before speaking and to choose my words wisely
