What is it? Why is it important? To have a classroom were both students and teachers are excited about the learning that is taking place and enjoying the time that they spend together, teachers must develop a positive environment. This comes through encouraging the students to respect one another, build relationships, as well as work hard in their studies. The way in which the room is set up, or the way in which the teacher chooses to organize the physical space of the room, can also greatly affect the tone of the classroom. In addition, teachers must be able to discipline their students when necessary, ensuring that the classroom remains a place where people build each other up and learning is consistently the primary focus.
What are the components? 2A - Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport Before students will be able to dedicate themselves to learning, they must feel that the classroom is a place where they are loved, valued and safe. To make this a reality, teachers must take the time to invest in their students' lives, both inside and outside of the classroom. In addition, teachers and students must be willing to communicate with one another and show respect to each other. 2B - Establishing a Culture for Learning In order for students to be successful in both the present and the future, they must want to learn, work hard, and show dedication to their studies. Teachers should encourage their students to do these things through developing an environment in the classroom where hard work is valued. 2C - Managing Classroom Procedures In the classroom, teachers and students must be able to work together.
