What is it? Why is it important? As teachers, we have a responsibility to constantly be learning, growing, and developing so that we can help our students do the same. One of the most effective ways for teachers to do this is through building relationships with their peers and forming a professional community. When teachers see the school that they work at as a location for a body of professionals to come together, supporting each other and making one another better, progress will be exponential. In addition, such relationships should not be limited to teachers in the same building but should extend throughout the entirety of the district. This will help the district to reach its full potential and to stay united as a community. What are the key elements involved? Relationships with colleagues: In order for teachers to have the most success, they should take advantage of the knowledge that the other teachers around them have. It is a great idea to ask for advice from peers on various classroom actions. Involvement in a culture of professional inquiry: Teachers should remember that they too are always learners. With this in mind, teachers should respect one another and the work that they are dedicating to becoming better at their job. Service to the school: In addition to being in community with one another, teachers should work to further the goals of the school as a whole. When this is the case, the teachers, school and community will be connected and working together. Participation in school and district projects: Once a school is on the same page, districts and other schools in the area should look to unite whenever possible so the professional community can be advanced. How will I implement this component into my classroom?
I will reach out to fellow teachers through eating lunch with them when possible
I will ask other teachers for their opinions on lessons or various situations that I come across in the classroom
I will work to be involved in the district and community through attending extracurricular events
