What is it? Why is it important? This component of Danielson's Framework discusses the importance of creating an environment where students want to learn, where they try again if they do not understand immediately, and where they know that what they are learning will help them to become the best people that they can be. It is crucial for the teacher to set expectations, for the classroom as a whole and for each individual, that will push the students to work hard and to do their best. Without an engaging environment, learning becomes more difficult. However, with a positive, inviting classroom atmosphere, all people involved are preparing for success. What are the key elements involved? Importance of the content and of learning: Often, students ask their teachers about how what they are studying will influence them later in life. It is important to include real world examples in teaching so that students are more likely to see the value in what they are learning. Expectations for learning and achievement: Students need to know that just because something is challenging does not mean that it is impossible. In fact, challenges often lead to the greatest opportunities for growth. To reassure students that their work has a purpose, teachers must praise students for the time and effort that they put forth. Student pride in work: Students will begin to believe in themselves and take pride in their work when they know that their energy and hard work are valued. Again, teachers must be positively reinforcing their students' progress so that their visions of themselves will be healthy and their desire to learn will increase. How will I implement this component of Danielson's Framework into my classroom?
In order to create a healthy culture for learning, I will involve students in setting goals and expectations for the classroom, emphasizing the importance of working hard and learning each day.
When assigning projects, asking questions in class, or forming test questions, I will work to include examples from the real world so that students will see how their learning applies to their lives outside of the classroom.
I will have weekly recaps, showing all that has been learned in the past week. By doing this, I will be encouraging students to work hard and to be proud of the progress that they are making.
