What is it? Why is it important? This Domain focusses on the procedures that take place in the classroom every day. To have a successful classroom, teachers need to be intentional in their actions, communicating with students regularly, asking them questions that cause them to think critically, providing them with opportunities to participate and be engaged in the lesson, evaluating their understanding of the material, and being flexible when necessary. Each new day will require different things from teachers, but they must be able to consistently display these traits so that they are teaching their students to the best of their ability. What are the components? 3A - Communicating With Students Without communication between students and teachers, a classroom will not run smoothly. It is important for teachers to communicate with their students regularly and effectively, clearly explaining all details of a lesson. In addition, teachers must use examples that are relevant to the students and be able to demonstrate the material in a different manner if students are not comprehending as hoped. 3B - Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques In the classroom, it is critical that teachers give their students a sufficient amount of opportunities to speak through discussions and questions. In addition, it is crucial that these times of conversation encourage the students to think deeply. This allows students to be better engaged in the lesson and to learn from one another, as well as allows the teacher to observe the students' thoughts and how they are perceiving the material. 3C - Engaging Students in Learning If students do not want to learn and are not enjoying the instruction that is taking place, they will not give the teachers their full attention. Because of this, teachers must create ways for their students to be involved in the lessons through asking the questions, having them work in groups, playing games, etc. They must constantly work to be sure that their students are focused on the topic at hand so that they will learn as much as possible. 3D - Using Assessment in Instruction Assessments should not simply be a test or a quiz at the end of a unit. Instead, they should be used throughout instructional periods to determine where the students are at and whether or not they are truly learning. In addition, these assessments provide teachers with the opportunity to give feedback to their students, to correct common mistakes, to clarify uncertainties, and to repeat portions of a lesson if necessary. 3E - Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness Regardless of the planning and preparation that teachers have done, they must always be willing and able to adjust their lessons to meet the needs of the their students. If students are not understanding a lesson exactly as the teacher had hoped, he or she must slow down or come up with a different approach. However, teachers must first be able to see when their students are struggling, reading body language and being attentive to subtle clues, so that they can change their plans accordingly.
