What is it? Why is it important? To create a successful learning environment, the classroom must have a sense of routine and normalcy so that students know what to expect and what is expected of them. This does not mean that students cannot enjoy themselves and have fun, but it shows them that learning is something to take seriously. Teachers must remember to keep a focused and controlled atmosphere through encouraging positive behavior. What are the key elements involved? Expectations: Students must know what is required of them inside and outside of the classroom. Furthermore, teachers need to be sure that the guidelines and expectations are being followed. Monitoring of student behavior: In the classroom, teachers must be alert and aware of what is happening. They need to be able to engage, help, and correct their students without disturbing the learning of others in the room. Response to student misbehavior: When students do not abide by the guidelines that have been set for the classroom, teachers must act in such a way that shows respect to the student, but remains respectful of the classroom and the others that are involved. It is important for teachers to not simply punish, but to seek to understand why students are acting the way that they are. How will I implement this component in my classroom?
On the first day of class, I will have a discussion with my students about what our goals for the year are. Then, as a class, we will form expectations that we have for ourselves and for each other in order to accomplish our goals. These will become our classroom guidelines.
When a student misbehaves in class, I will try to discuss with them afterwards, asking them why they acted as they did. This will give students a chance to share if something external is influencing their behavior in the classroom and will allow me to help them if possible.
I will establish a flexible routine in the classroom so that students know what to expect when they walk inside the room. This does not mean making everyday the same, but instead it gives the students a sense of stability and confidence on how learning will take place.
