What is it? Why is it important? Communication is the key to success in the classroom. Without it, a classroom cannot function smoothly. It is crucial for teachers to effectively communicate with their students when teaching a lesson, leading an activity, or giving instructions. When seeking to further explain a topic, teachers must be able to use examples and metaphors in their lessons that are relevant to the students' lives and will help them build a deeper understanding of the material. However, teachers must also know when to refrain from speaking so that their students will be encouraged to think critically for themselves. In general, it is highly important for teachers and students to communicate with each other so that the classroom will be an enjoyable place to be. What are the key elements involved? Expectations for learning: Through teacher communication, students must know what the purpose of a lesson is and what they will have learned when it is over. Directions and procedures: When giving instructions, teachers must be clear and thorough so that students know what behavior is expected of them. Explanations of content: During instruction, teachers must implement language, examples, and images that engage the students and help enhance their understanding. Use of oral and written language: Because students are listening and observing, teachers need to be sure that they are speaking correctly, properly, and appropriately. This will ensure that the students have a good example to follow. How will I implement this component into my classroom?
When giving instructions, whether written or oral, I will be sure to be clear and go over them thoroughly so that students know what to do
I will make communication a focus in the classroom everyday through talking with all students and encouraging them to communicate with me as well
I will watch my own speech and work to communicate professionally so that students will be further exposed to correct English
