What is it? Why is it important? Teachers are hired to teach their students, but they must also remember that they are always learners, too. In order to be the best teachers that they can possibly be, teachers must continually develop in content, pedagogy and technology, as these are all things that are likely to change with time. In addition, it is helpful for teachers if they learn from each other, frequently asking one another for advice and sharing ideas together. While relationships with colleagues provides an excellent way for teachers to grow, they should also be connected in professional organizations, attend professional development conferences, read information articles, and/or take additional college classes, as all of these are ways for teachers to ensure that they are continuing to grow. What are the key elements involved? Enhancement of content knowledge and pedagogical skill: There are often new ideas introduced as to the content that should be taught, as well as the methods with which lessons should be taught. Because of this, teachers, need to stay up to date with the latest information. Receptivity to feedback from colleagues: When teachers work together through sharing thoughts, asking questions, and giving advice, they are forming a network of professionals that encourages professional growth and development. Service to the profession: Teachers must be involved in professional development organizations where they can learn. The knowledge that they gain from these functions will give them the ability to lead in their schools and to create a healthy environment of growth in the building. How will I implement this component into my classroom?
I will use social media to read informational articles and ask for the advice of other professionals
I will establish relationships with my colleagues so that I can learn from them
I will be open to new methods of instruction and content that arise throughout my teaching career
I will attend professional development days to ensure that I am growing
