What is it? Why is it important? Although the word "assessment" is commonly associated with a test or quiz at the end of a certain chapter or unit, it should also be thought of as a means of instruction. In the classroom, teachers need to be aware of what their students are retaining and what seems to be causing confusion so that they know how to proceed in the future. By using assessment within instruction through questions, exit tickets, classroom games, etc., teachers are able to see their students' levels of understanding of the material being taught. However, the assessments themselves will not tell teachers exactly to proceed. Teachers must be alert in the classroom, using the assessments to make visible signs of understanding or signs of uncertainty. What are the key elements involved? Assessment criteria: In order for students to have the most success with assessments, they must understand the instructions and know what is expected of them. Monitoring of student learning: Throughout the course of their lessons, teachers need to be aware of how their students are receiving the lesson. Great teachers learn to read students body language, allowing them to gauge their students' understanding without interrupting the lesson. Feedback to students: Letting students know how they are doing can greatly help them improve in the future. Teachers should be encouraging, challenging, and further instructing students through their feedback. Student self-assessment and monitoring of progress: It is important for students to value their learning and to take ownership of their work. For this to happen, they need to know what the goal of the learning is and what is expected that they will know. How will I implement this component into my classroom?
I will stay alert and practice reading my students' expressions to know if they are grasping the lesson or not
During a lesson, I will ask several questions as a way of measuring understanding
I will use activities such as kahoot or exit tickets to see where students are at
When I notice that students are not fully understanding, I will adjust the lesson to meet their learning needs
